About Euro-Methwork

Euro-Methwork is a forum for those who are active in the substitution treatment field in the European Region, i.e. practitioners, researchers, policy makers, but also heroin users, their friends and families. 'Meth' in Methwork used to refer to methadone. However, in the last decade a number of other substances have become available to ensure a good range of options in the treatment of heroin addiction. To date, 'Meth' stands for 'MEdically assisted Treatment of Heroin addiction'
Our mission is to improve the quality of pharmacotherapy in addiction treatment (often referred to as substitution treatment) and ameliorate the accessibility for all those who need this kind of treatment.

Future plans

  • In 2008 and 2009, the ZEUS project will be integrated into existing German structures. Presently, steps are taken to make this objective come true.
  • Given the success of ZEUS, Euro-Methwork plans to carry out similar projects in other European countries. Making use of already existing expertise of (medical) staff working in ST, giving them extra instruments to become effective trainers, and subsequently assisting them in carrying out training, is a simple and effective way of  improving the quality of substitution treatment.
  • Euro-Methwork foresees the production of an educational tool were trainees can do virtual intakes of patients applying for ST through a computer game.
  • A project Suboxone, is there added value? is foreseen in the near future. This project will be based on interviews with doctors and patients, and a review of existing literature. It will result in a booklet and a DVD.
